Volunteers Working In The Kitchen Garden

Seasonal Kitchen Garden Assistant

Team: Kitchen Garden
Paid position

 (6 months / 20 hours per week) 

An opportunity has arisen to join a vibrant team and work in a four-acre walled kitchen garden, growing fruit and vegetables using regenerative agricultural practices.

Applicants must have at least one year’s relevant horticultural experience. A passion for gardening and an appreciation for the natural world is a must.

We are looking for an individual who has the knowledge and practical skills to help with the growing and care of our fruit and vegetables and feels confident to take a pro-active approach to growing in the kitchen garden. If you are interested, we think you will need to:

  • Be happy to work on your own and with a team of staff and volunteers.
  • Enjoy working outside in all weather conditions.
  • Be able to follow instructions and take initiative.
  • Work unsupervised.
  • Be physically fit.

Tasks include weeding, watering, raising and caring for plants, harvesting and caring for the growing spaces and occasionally leading other volunteers in their tasks.

Volunteers Working In The Garden

Be One of Our Grounds Volunteers

Would you enjoy working as part of team within the stunning grounds of Ashburnham Place?

We have volunteering opportunities to work within our Grounds Team.  This could be helping grow fruit and vegetables within the 4 acre Kitchen Garden or tending flower beds and mowing lawns within the extensive Ornamental Gardens.

Prior Gardening experience is preferable but not essential, as training will be provided.  We aren’t able to pay expenses, but we can provide morning coffee and a cooked lunch.

Office Reception Assistant Ashburnham

Assistant to the Facility Director

Team: Assistant

A position has risen as Assistant to the Facility Director. Primarily the role would be support and administrative as well working with the Facility Director in the effective running of the Facility Department, within Ashburnham Place.

An interest in land, buildings and summer events would be desirable. Basic computer skills: emails, spreadsheets and good relational interpersonal skills are essential.

The role would suit someone on a career break or recently retired, working 3 days a week for an initial period of 6 months.

Man Working In The Garden

Food Forest Volunteer

Ashburnham Place (non-residential)

Over recent years we have planted and begun growing a ‘food forest’ in the Friar’s Field area of Ashburnham Place’s beautiful grounds.  This process is based on permaculture principles and designed to be a source of wild food for many years to come.  

We are looking for a local volunteer who is willing to come in at least one day (Fridays) each week to help care for and maintain the ‘food forest’ as we continue to develop this young but long-term project.  Tasks will include planting new trees and shrubs, maintaining the bracken clearance, checking for pest damage, watering young plants, helping on the straw bale ‘house’ building project, general monitoring of the food forest through the seasons….

As a volunteer at Ashburnham Place you will get all meals while volunteering, all tools needed to carrying out tasks, receive a discount in the Orangery Tea Room and to ACT events, be part of our international community and enjoy year-round access to our 220 acres of grounds and gardens.

We are looking for the following type of person:

  • Experience of outdoor work
  • Passionate about nature and the environment
  • Willing to work with and learn about perma-culture principles
  • A committed individual
  • Enjoys experiencing the seasons (and their weather!) first hand
  • Physically fit (Friar’s Field is steep!)
  • Understanding of the Trust’s Christian ethos
