Information about this role

Ashburnham Place (non-residential)

Over recent years we have planted and begun growing a ‘food forest’ in the Friar’s Field area of Ashburnham Place’s beautiful grounds.  This process is based on permaculture principles and designed to be a source of wild food for many years to come.

We are looking for a local volunteer who is willing to come in at least one day (Fridays) each week to help care for and maintain the ‘food forest’ as we continue to develop this young but long-term project.  Tasks will include planting new trees and shrubs, maintaining the bracken clearance, checking for pest damage, watering young plants, helping on the straw bale ‘house’ building project, general monitoring of the food forest through the seasons….

As a volunteer at Ashburnham Place you will get all meals while volunteering, all tools needed to carrying out tasks, receive a discount in the Orangery Tea Room and to ACT events, be part of our international community and enjoy year-round access to our 220 acres of grounds and gardens.

We are looking for the following type of person:

  • Experience of outdoor work
  • Passionate about nature and the environment
  • Willing to work with and learn about perma-culture principles
  • A committed individual
  • Enjoys experiencing the seasons (and their weather!) first hand
  • Physically fit (Friar’s Field is steep!)
  • Understanding of the Trust’s Christian ethos
